Week 6 Underground Comics Drool:
So, I read Drool for my underground comics, and my two reactions were wow and confusion. Just to be clear, I said wow not because it was amazing, but because I was so appalled by the racism, sexism, and just its general depiction of everything. I am also confused by it because I feel like I am confused about who the reading is for. I say this because in a specific story, the one regarding president Nixon visiting the people of Harlem, both sides were depicted in shitty light. I say this because Nixon was caricatured as very goofy and oblivious, which is not how you usually depict the leader of your nation. Also, the people of Harlem were depicted as very animalistic and savage. The illustrator chose to show them as thieves, huge druggies, and very aggressive, which repulsed me. Even the way he caricatured them, they were shown looking like chimps. Pardon my french, but it was super fucked up. So, this is why I am very confused as to who the comic is for. Because, I feel like the people who support Nixon, and the people who were equal rights at the time did not really overlap, and this genre does not cater to either side. So, that means this was printed for some very niche demographic of anarchists that I hopefully never meet. Overall I hated it, but I guess I will remember it forever because of how appalling it was. So if that was the goal of it, it succeeded.

Week 12:  T his week I read My Favorite Things is Monsters, and I liked it a lot. Immediately, I noticed the interesting way it was drawn. It was drawn on a background that looks like a spiral notebook, and the drawings appeared to have been done in a ballpoint pen. In my opinion, these were really strong stylistic choices because it makes the reading come off as if it were someone’s journal. Because it felt like we were reading someone's journal, it creates this false sense of reality where I felt like I was snooping on juicy secrets, which made it easier to be immersed in the reading. Week 14 This week I read the Perry Bible Fellowship, and It was a fun read. I read a lot of webcomics such as owl turd, and it very much radiated the same energy. It required not a lot of thought process, the humor was very clever, and they were really quick reads. It saddens me to say this, but in our society of ever-shortening attention spans, people just don’t have the patience anymore to read epic comics like Bones, Marvel, and Manga. People want their entertainment instantly, and if they have to read something lengthy, and they aren’t immediately laughing then they are very quick to pass it by. It sucks that that is the reason they have a place, but for the sake of webcomics, I only see them increasing in popularity. However, even though I presented a big negative, it's not all bad. Week 1 Reading Arrival by Shaun Tan: First off, my opinion of Arrival by Shaun Tan can be described by one word, and that is wow. My initial thoughts to the comic were, “okay well the art is really pretty”, and, “oh, so it is going to be another story about immigrants”. However, when I saw the image of the giant serpent spine in the city, the story immediately hooked me in. As the story progressed, all I could think was, “ wow this world is avant-garde as fuck”. In all honesty, it was a bit disorienting for me, but then I realized that the writer was probably trying to help me identify with the main character. The main character was an immigrant to a foreign land, and us being just as confused as he was really helped me as a reader to identify with the character and his situation.
