Week 5 A Contract With God Blog:
So, I decided to reread A Contract With God by Will Eisner, and it amazed me how the more you read it, the better it gets. There were many aspects that really caught my eye, but more specifically, the splash titles and the choice of framing. The splash titles I really loved because they really set the tone for the whole piece right away, which hooked me immediately. His style of shading in the splash titles, I thought, really amplified the stories because they had a very dark gritty feel to them, very much like the environments he was drawing. His choice of shot in these splash pages also reminded me of how in film, they use establishing shots in order to set the tone for scenes. It really felt that Will Eisner was inspired by cinematic elements, and this choice to include them really strengthened his storytelling.
I was also very interested in his choice of framing. In many comics beforehand, in order to emphasize certain frames, you would just increase the size of the frame creating a hierarchy of importance based on size. In a Contract with God, he made a very interesting design choice where he broke the frame and would draw outside it. This created a hierarchy of uniqueness, Which made these storytelling moments really stand out. Because he broke the frame, it kind of created this sense that the story was not contained within the pages. This helped me to immerse myself in the story more and really enjoy the stories. Overall, I still really liked it, and in all honesty, it is one of my favorite pieces of literature.
